Spain has made a formal protest against the visit to Gibralter by Princess Anne which the Government deems is ‘inappropriate’ and ‘hurtful’ to the Spanish people, particularly those in the Campo de Gibraltar area.
Princess Anne begins her three day visit today, the main purpose being to officially inaugurate the Princess Royal Medical Centre located on the Rock. The centre has been built on the isthmus connecting Gibraltar to mainland Spain, an area which the Spanish maintain is ‘illegally’ occupied by the British and not covered by the contentious Treaty of Utrecht.
Princess Anne will be greeted on arrival by the Governor of Gibraltar. Tomorrow morning she will inaugurate the new medical centre and in the afternoon will visit the Bastión de Reyes leisure complex. On Friday, her final day, she will be visiting the Waterport housing complex and the Saint Martin Special School.
