Mayors and businessmen from the marble producing areas have been meeting to try and agree some sort of reorganisation to save the industry which has been heavily affected by the economic crisis.
Four companies have already gone under, 225 have cash flow problems and over 1,000 workers have lost their jobs. A further 4,000 could also lose their jobs of things don’t improve in the sector.
Calling themselves the Crisis Bureau, the employers, unions and politicians are seeking a restructuring of the industry to make it more modern and more competitive. Such an ititiative, however, would require a cash injection into the industry of between €60 million and €100 million.
