No doubting the third goal, a cracker from Steven Gerard, and the fourth from Dossena as Liverpool overcame Real Madrid 4-0 on the night, 5-0 on aggregate, to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
It is the first time in five years that Real have not made the quarters of the competition, though they only have themselves to blame. Apart from the referee for the first two goals, one a blatantly incorrect penalty decision, of course.
Real didn’t wake up until the second half and were totally outplayed for the first 50 minutes. Shapeless in midfield and totally ineffective up front, it was only a matter of time before they fell behind, and they duly did, albeit in dubious circumstances. That’s football, though.
This was a match that Real Madrid never looked like winning and Liverpool go marching on to the quarter-finals.
