Work is underway off the coasts of Algorrobo and Vélez-Málaga to install an artificial reef.
The project, funded by the European Fisheries Fund (75%) and the Junta de Andalucía (25%), is designed to both put an end to illegal trawling in the area and to preserve valuable fisheries.
Reinforced concrete barriers are designed to stop the deep trawling and other barriers reduce the drift, thus sheltering the marine life and actually attracting it to the area.
An area of 7.17 square kilometres of Axarquia coastline will be protected after the completion of the project and a total of 114.62 kilometres of coastline in the whole of Málaga province.
