The Nerja Caves Foundation is presenting the History Museum, currently under construction on the Paseo Nuevo, as a project for consideration under the Plan for Sustainable Tourism in the Axarquia.
The first phase of the project was financed through a loan from the Unicaja bank in the amount of €2.7 million and the Caves Foundation is now looking to secure a further loan of €1.8 million to carry out phase two.
Earlier, the Councillor for Tourism, José Miguel García, suggested that the Nerja Caves Foundation should be asking for financial assistance from the Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga Provincial Council before the manager of the Nerja Caves Foundation, Ángel Ramírez, goes down in history not only as the first Nerjeño to lead the Caves Foundation, but also the first to put it into debt.
Ángel Ramírez responded by saying that he believes once the museum is included on the network of museums in the region, it will qualify for various grants and other financial assistance and that this will be readily forthcoming. Ramírez added that he thinks the museum could be included on the network within a month and accused the Council of being ‘ignorant’ on the matter.
