Spain’s unilateral decision to withdraw its troops from Kosovo caused a bit of irritation in Washington and a Spanish delegation has been assuring the US authorities that the withdrawal will be carried out in close coordination with its NATO allies and commanders on the ground to ensure that there is no disruption to the KFOR operation.
The withdrawal of troops could possibly take up to a year, although the initial deadline is the summer.
On the other hand, Spain is possibly set to increase its commitment to Afghanistan with the offer of a battalion of troops to help during presidential elections in the country in August. In addition, the Guardia Civil may increase their participation by training the Afghan police.
