Members of the Mountain Rescue Servive (SEREIM) completed the rescue on Sunday morning of four climbers stuck on the north face of Veleta in the Sierra Nevada mountains. One of the climbers was injured following a fall. The rescue began on Saturday afternoon after one of the climbers suffered a fall near the Corral del Veleta in the El Canuto park, close to the town of Güéjar Sierra.
The original idea had been to use the SEREIM helicopter to effect the rescue but blizzards, snow and poor visibilty caused a change of plan. Instead, Guardia Civil officers made the journey on foot and at around 23:00 on Saturday evening, the officers managed to locate the injured man.
The injured man, a 52 year old, was suffering from multiple injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, efforts to rescue the remaining three climbers continued and eventually, at around 06:00 on Sunday morning, they were taken to the Pradollano clinic for treatment for hyperthermia.
The overnight temperature on the mountain had been around twelve degrees below zero.
