The agricultral association ASAJA has this morning distributed free of charge some 25,000 kilos of produce in Sevilla as a protest against the economic situation of the farming communities in Andalucía.
Following the distribution of the free food, a protest march is scheduled to highlight the plight of around 20,000 farms which could go under if no action is taken.
Lucky recipients will get tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, zucchini and eggplant from Almeria, chickpeas, potatoes, wine, vinegar and sugar from Cádiz, oranges and garlic from Córdoba, onions and avocados from Málaga, strawberries from Huelva, oil from Jaén, rice, olives, asparagus, potatoes and oil from Sevilla.
The income of farmers continues to go down, decreasing by 8.5% in 2008, but production costs continue to rise, a situation which led to 10,000 farms falling by the wayside in 2008 and threatens another 20,000 who are ‘on the brink’.
Still waiting for Ferrari to organise a protest.
