Today is the turn of the chicken farmers to make a protest, handing out 5,000 free portions of chicken and wine in Granada.
The UPA has mobilised chicken farmers to protest about the crisis affecting the industry which, they say, is on the brink of bankruptcy. They are concerned about the near monopoly exercised by the companies supplying the chickens for farming which has resulted in the imposition of unrealistic production demands.
This, in turn, is causing the financial collapse of many farms. The UPA are asking the Department of Agriculture to intervene and force the supply companies to sit down and negotiate with the farmers to resolve the situation.
There are 1,738 chicken farms in Andalucía with around 25 million birds, the major concentrations being in the provinces of Sevilla, Huelva, Granada and Jaén.
