Normally, when a motorcyclist is stopped for driving without a helmet, he is given a ticket and then off he goes again, but that could be about to change as from May 15th when a new DGT safety campaign gets underway.
The police will have the power to detain the vehicle until the rider goes and gets suitable headgear. Without a helmet, he will not be allowed to proceed.
The campaign is particularly aimed at Andalucía, Murcia and Extremadura, the three autonomous regions where there is a below average use of helmets. Last year, 15% of motorcyclists killed in road traffic accidents were not wearing a helmet.
