At the northern end of Nerja, in the ‘Los Poetas’ area, is a partially completed four-storey building which was originally intended as a vocational training centre. However, the funds ran out and work stopped on the project a couple of years ago.
The Council has so far spent €600,000 on this project but has no more money to continue and efforts to obtain funding from the Junta de Andalucía, most notably via the Regional Employment Board, have failed. This site, incidentally, was one of the locations offered to the provincial authorities for the construction of the new Health Centre, but was rejected as unsuitable.
To complete the project as a vocational training centre would, it is estimated, cost another €3 million, so the Council has been looking at alternative possibilities.
An idea they are now pursuing is to modify the project and turn the site into a sort of musical, or cultural centre. Amongst other things, it would be a place where the Banda Municipal de Música, the Banda de Cornetas y Tambores, the Escuela de Danza and other organisations and associations could practice and rehearse.
It will, of course, still require external funding and the Council is now preparing various requests and proposals for the Junta de Andalucía and other provincial authorities.
