Celebration of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Nerja Caves has done little or nothing to stem the general downward trend in visitor numbers.
During the first four months of 2009, visitor numbers to the Nerja Caves were down by 8.47% compared to 2008. However, this general trend is affecting all major monuments and attractions throughout Spain and most have suffered a far greater decline than have the Nerja Caves.
According to the Nerja Caves Foundation, a total of 92,739 people visited the caves in the first four months of 2009, that’s 8,591 than in 2008.
The current economic crisis is being cited as a major factor in the general decline in visitor numbers in all cases.
