The latest DGT road safety campaign, which starts today and continues until May 27th, will see the doubling of speed controls on secondary roads.
A TV and radio campaign, reminding drivers that the majority of fatalities on secondary roads are as a result of excessive speed, will run in parallel to the actual controls.
A total of 264 mobile radar units will be in operation on around 2,000 stretches of road as the DGT aim to check 1.5 million drivers.
There were 2,181 deaths on the roads last year, 1,706 being on secondary roads. Speed was considered a major factor in almost one quarter of these cases.
