Barcelona clinched their 19th league title last night without having to kick a ball as their only potential rivals, Real Madrid, lost 2-3 to Villarreal. Not that this could have escaped anyone’s attention with the traditional tooting of car horns late last night, early this morning!
Barcelona also won the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, beating Athletic Bilbao 4-1, and if they can overcome Manchester United in the Champions League final on May 27th, they will become the first Spanish club to win the treble.
The La Liga title is Barcelona’s first for three years and it is eleven years since they last did the double.
Real Madrid traveled to Villarreal on Saturday night but came away empty handed. Pires put the home side ahead early in the match and then van der Vaart equalised at the start of the second half. Cani restored Villarreal’s lead but Higuian levelled the scores again with two minutes to go.
Almost on full time, Casillas failed to deal with a corner kick and dropped the ball at the feet of Capdevila who then slotted the ball home.
