On Wednesday, the 109 deputies of the Andalucian Parliament will debate a request by Marbella to be reclassified as a large city (over 75,000 population) with special historic or economic characteristics.
Such a move up the ladder, almost guaranteed to be approved, will provide added benefits for the residents of the city as well as enabling additional funding and investment. It is a status enjoyed, in the main, by provincial capitals and is part of the decentralisation process, with such cities having their own budgets. Parliament will also consider the city of Jerez as a candidate for similar reclassification.
