At 08:45 on Monday morning, as the Tranvia tram was exiting Torre del Mar to make its journey to Jurado Lorca park in Vélez-Málaga, the brakes failed and the machine began to roll backwards.
This backward trip was down the section of track which is not yet in service. After damaging three cars en route and scattering pedestrians, it finally came to rest by crashing into a lorry. The driver was unloading his cargo of flour when he saw the monster coming and tried to move the vehicle. However, he was unsuccessful and just managed to dive out of the way, suffering minor injuries in the process.
Two other people were also injured in the incident. The Councilor for Transportation, Antonio López, has ordered an investigation into why the tram had no brakes. Possiblities include a power outage or human error.
The Councilor pointed out, however, that even though this section of the Tranvia is not yet in operation, people should still not park there.
