The new Rio Chillar walkway is already beginning to show signs of deterioration according to the Councilor for the Environment, José Miguel Jimena Ortega, due to a lack of maintenance, cleaning, lighting and surveillance.
At the end of this long and expensive project, a couple of problems arose, most notably the build-up of pools of stagnant water at the mouth of the river and near to the bridge. A mental note has, we believe, been made to construct the next waterway sloping downwards.
Herein lies the problem. The project is actually being carried out by the regional Ministry of Environment and the Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza and they are responsible for the satisfactory completion of the works, including remedial measures such as eliminating the pools of stagnant water. Once completed, the whole thing is, or will be, handed over to the Nerja Council, no doubt with an official inauguration.
Until that time, however, Nerja Council is not able/willing to carry out the necessary maintenance to keep the area looking clean and tidy.
In the meantime, Councilor José Miguel Jimena Ortega asks residents to be mindful of the situation and, in particular, for dog owners to show consideration and remove the turds deposited by their pooches. There is no cleaning going on along the walkway at the present time and the image presented to visitors is not a good one if they have to tread carefully through a minefield of poo.

What a shame if this recently developed area is not maintained .Love to walk that area and have been coming to Nerja with over 10 years now.

I am not sure what the councillor is looking at. The “vegetation” is what was there before as was the graffiti but the walkways are certainly an improvement on the previous situation. I for one am very pleased at the improvement in the area and once the inauguration is complete feel confident that Nerja will maintain this much improved asset to the best of their ability.
