The Nerja branch of SIP-AN, the Independent Union of Police Officers, has sent a registered letter to the Mayor complaining about the lack of officers on the streets of the town, especially at night and during weekends.
The local Police consists of 43 officers, 21 of whom belong to SIP-AN. The Local Police has recently undergone a reorganisation, with a number of different units being created.
The Union states that it is not against the existence of different units, although they do contend that the reorganisation was in breach of an agreement reached with the Council, but they do believe that with only 43 officers available, the new system doesn’t work.
In support of their complaint, the Union points out that during the period from May 16th to June 7th, only two officers were actually on the streets. They claim that the intransigence of the Chief of Police has made negotiation and resolution of the problem impossible.
The Councilor for the Police, Jonathan Méndez, has stated that he will look into the matter to seek the best possible solution for all concerned.
