Residual waters, as they like to call them, will continue to flow into the sea until at least 2012 according to the latest statements made by the Junta de Andalucía. This is the sewage plant that should have been finished in 2006.
The director of the Andalucían Water Authority, Juan Paniagua, stated yesterday that the €37.2 million project would be finished in 2012. He added that this was provided, of course, that there were no delays. Juan Paniagua stressed that any possible delays would be of a technical rather than political nature.
After the preliminary draft is ready, this will be published in the BOE, BOJA and the Boletín Oficial (Provincial Gazette) as a matter of urgency. The draft environmental impact report is expected to be completed in November (it seems not to have even been started yet!) and then the tendering process can begin.
The completion period has been set at 34 months, so it will probably be ready at the same time as El Chucho beach!
The plant will have a capacity of 25,000 litres per day, which is enough to cover (as if we weren’t covered enough already) a population of 40,000. The final construction will have a dual-phase system which could ensure water treatment for 100,000 people.
Sewage plants are also being planned for Algarrobo, Alhaurín el Grande, Cártama, Álora, Pizarra, Benamocarra, Cañete la Real, Colmenar, Cuevas de San Marcos, Istán, Mollina, Monda, Teba, Villanueva de Algaidas and Villanueva de Tapia.
