Today, Monday June 15th, sees the price of tobacco and diesel oil increase after new taxes were approved by the Council of Ministers.
Citing tobacco and diesel oil as products causing high emissions of greenhouse gases (any excuse), the state coffers will benefit to the tune of €2,320 million.
The price of tobacco increases by, on average, €0.20 for a packet of 20 cigarettes. The price of rolling tobacco also increases.
Diesel oil will increase by 2.9 cents per litre. As well as being a source of income for local authorities, the measure is being touted as a tool for protecting the environment.
