Two firefighters were injured yesterday as they tackled a blaze in the Cortijo de los Manaderos area of Parauta, Málaga province. Both required hospital treatment.
The fire, which destroyed around ten hectares of scrub land, began in the afternoon. A large force was deployed to tackle the blaze to prevent it spreading to the Sierra de las Nieves natural park.
At the scene were over one hundred firefighters with nine fire engines, six helicopters and two planes. It took until 20:25 to control and extinguish the fire, the difficult terrain not helping matters.
The two injured firefighters were hit by a discharge of water from one of the airborne units. One man was treated for a dislocated shoulder and was later discharged from hospital, the second man remains in the Hospital Comarcal de Ronda (Málaga) under observation. He suffered injuries to the head and stomach as well as fracturing his fibula.
