In June 2005, a resident in the La Villa area of Benamocarra returned from a trip to Switzerland to find her garden full of rubbish and complained to the Council.
The house, in calle Canteras Altas, is overlooked by the mirador (viewpoint) and local residents had begun heaving rubbish down for some time. The situation continued after her return. At first it was apparently just bottles, but then all sorts of waste material, such as foodstuffs, began appearing. This, in turn, led to problems with unwanted reptiles and rodents and, of course, a nasty smell.
Neighbours in the street also began to complain.
Yesterday, the Council finally sent a team of operatives to remove the rubbish….2,500 kilos of it. The workmen removed 80 large bags full of rotting material.
The Mayor lamented a situation whereby people throw rubbish from their balconies and instructed the Local Police to install a deterrent mechanism, such as a security camera, in the area.
One would wonder if removing the rubbish immediately after the first complaint, 2005, and taking action against the offenders might not have been more beneficial all round!
