Figures just published relating to tourist visitors to Spain during the first five months of 2009 show an overall decline of 11.8% compared to last year.
A total of 18.3 million people visited Spain between January and May, 11.8% less than in the same period in 2008. In May itself, visitor numbers were 5 million, a drop of 11.7%.
Visitors from the three major sources of tourism, the UK, Germany and France, were all down by varying degrees.
UK: down by 17.8%
Germany: down by 11.2%
France: down by 8.9%
Cataluña is the region which received the most tourists during the period January to May, 4.62 million, but even that was a drop of 11.2%. The Canary Islands, with 3.5 million visitors, were 14.5% down on last year.
