A spokesperson for the government in Extremadura, Carmen Pereira, has confirmed that the bus involved in a fatal accident in Miajadas (Cáceres) on Wednesday was travelling at excessive speed.
The accident resulted in the death of three passengers, with another eleven being injured, several of them seriously.
Examination of the tachograph on the bus showed that it was travelling at a speed unsuitable for the stretch of road concerned. The Guardia Civil is now studying whether the excessive speed at the time the bus left the road and overturned was due to reckless driving or to some mechanical fault on the vehicle.
According to a preliminary statement made by the driver at the time of the accident, the bus suffered ‘brake failure’. If, however, the speeding was due to reckless driving, the driver could face three charges of ‘reckless or imprudent homicide’.
