A fire in Mijas yesterday destroyed 15 hectares of grassland, scrub and agricultural land and forced the evacuation of five people from their homes.
The fire began at around 16.45 in the Las Rosas area but strong winds saw it spread to Cerros del Águila. A large team of specialists gathered to tackle the fire, including a dozen Infocid technicians, 71 firefighters, Guardia Civil, Local Police and several environmental officials. Three large capacity helicopters and a water bomber belonging to the Ministry of Environment were also involved.
The fire threatened about a dozen homes in the area, most empty due to being holiday homes owned by foreigners, and five people were evacuated from the area as a precautionary measure.
The fire was eventually extinguished at around 20:30, although the area remains cordoned off and is being monitored.
