The economic crisis has forced many retailers to offer discount prices throughout the past year but now, with the start of ‘summer sales’, they are being even more aggressive in Málaga, offering up to 70% off in an attempt to salvage someting from a disastrous year. The initial response, however, has not been as expected.
A year ago, there would be queues outside the shops as people went in search of bargains, traffic hold-ups around the main commercial centres. But not this year, so far at least.
The first day of the summer sales was, according to many retailers, just like any other day, despite discounts of up to 70% on many articles. No queues, no traffic congestion, some shops not even getting a single customer for the first hour.
The situation, if it continues the same way, is a concern for the retailers, especially the smaller businesses. It is looking as though, at least for the moment, many people are adjusting their spending priorities in the face of reduced income.
