Fishing for molluscs has been banned in the maritime areas of Doñana and Matalascañas areas after high levels of harmful DSP toxins were found.
A quality control check by the Junta de Andalucía revealed that molluscs in these areas contained high levels of toxins and the decision was taken to ban fishing for, and selling of, these fish. The ban will remain in place until such time as the levels of toxins are such that they present no health threat to humans.
The rest of the coastline is unaffected. The illegal fishing for molluscs carries a fine ranging from €301 to €60,000.
