The mother of the 13 year old girl who was allegedly raped by six people, five of them minors, in the town of Baena, Córdoba, believes that it may be necessary to change the Ley del Menor (Juvenile Law) in order for justice to be served.
In a statement to reporters, the mother, María José Pérez, lamented the fact that two of the alleged perpetrators cannot be charged or prosecuted for the crime, one because he is under 13 years of age and the other because he is handicapped. She believes such a situation makes a mockery of the judicial system and allows the guilty to go free.
María José Pérez told reporters that her daughter now suffers nightmares as a result of the vicious attack and requires medication to help her to sleep.
Of the six accused, three are in a juvenile detention centre, being minors, one is being held in custody in prison, being a 22 year old adult, and two have been released.
