Four firemen died and two others were seriously injured while working to extinguish a forest fire in Horta de Sant Joan, Tarragona.
The fire is located between route T-330 and route T-334, south of the town and near Les Capçades. The six firefighters were working to halt the spread of the flames when, at around 15:00, a sudden change in the wind direction left them surrounded and trapped.
The two injured firemen are being treated at the Hospital del Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona. The high winds in the area also caused a cessation of aerial assistance with the blaze.
The fire, in a natural park area, has been raging since yesterday, Monday.
