Delegates from the hostelry industry in Málaga are meeting today to discuss the possibility of strike action during August and to set a timetable for such action.
A strike call would affect around 60,000 workers in the hostelry industry in Málaga province and during the key month of the year, August. The strikes would be intermittent and would take place in the first half of the month.
The dispute concerns the failure to agree a wages structure for 2009. The UGT and CC.OO Unions have appealed to the employers to continue negotiations in an effort to avert strike action.
The Unions believe that any a pay agreement should be similar to those agreed in other sectors of industry whereby the employer shares in the consequences of the economic crisis, rather than them being borne entirely by the work force.
August is the make or break month for tourism on the Costa del Sol and a strike would do no-one any good at all.
