After five days, the fire on the island of La Palma is finally under control and the task of extinguishing the blaze, which could take up to a week, can begin.
The fire began last Friday on the island of La Palma and has so far destroyed about 2,700 hectares of land. Over 500 firefighters and 11 aircraft toiled endlessly to control the blaze and finally, at 09:30 this morning, the fire was declared ‘under control’.
Most of the local residents who were evacuated from the area have now returned to their homes, although a few have returned to find nothing but ashes. Several people have lost everything, homes, belongings and even their businesses.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but there are reports that it could have been started as a result of some fireworks being let off.
