Real Madrid continue to spend their way out of the recession, the latest expensive acquisition being Xabi Alonso who, providing he is pronounced medically fit, will be on his way from Liverpool to join the Galacticos for a fee reportedly in the region of €30 million.
Alonso joins full-back Alvaro Arbeloa who arrived in Madrid from Liverpool last week.
Madrid, who managed to win absolutely nothing last season and went out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage for the first time in five years, have so far spent around €230 million in their attempts to ‘rebuild’ and produce a team capable of adding yet more silverware to their trophy cabinet(s).
Buying all the ‘best players’ does not guarantee success, of course, as many have found out to their cost in the past, those players have to gel as a team.
