Sixty people in the village of Albanchéz in Almeria were forced to leave their homes yesterday and spend the night with relatives and friends after a landslide affected their homes.
A low intensity earthquake was experienced in the area and this appears to have been the main cause of an avalanche of rocks which hit the thirty houses. The houses are built on a ridge of sandstone and loose soil.
Engineers are carring out checks on the houses to determine when, or if, the residents will be allowed to return home. There is concern that cracks in the structure of the buildings could grow and result in further problems, possibly even a new landslide.
