Cataluña is to become the first autonomous region to introduce voluntary chemical castration for prisoners convicted of sex crimes and who are likely to commit a similar offence when released.
The new measure will be launched in September to complement the existing treatment given to rapists after their release. Violators are to be offered the chemical castration drug to curb their sexual desire along with psychological help.
The effects of the drug are reversible. As soon as the drug is no longer being taken, normal sexual desire returns. A system, based on risk assessment, has been put in place to determine which prisoners should be offered the treatment.
A recent study has shown that only 5.5% of rapists commit further acts of aggression once they are released from prison. That’s 5.5% too many and no consolation to the victims of that 5.5%!
