A heavy storm in Jaén province yesterday evening caused flood waters up to two metres deep and a river of mud about twenty-five centimetres deep. Particularly badly hit was the municipality of Puente de Génave.
The storm occurred between 18:15 and 19:15 yesterday evening, affecting houses, garages, the public library, a park and even a recently opened swimming pool.
The damage to municipal property has been estimated at around €800,000, the damage to private property has yet to be assessed. The municipal swimming pool in the village of Peñolite was completely wrecked by the storm.
The Peñolite stream overflowed and burst its banks, water streaming through the area and destroying a XIX century bridge in the process. In calle de Santa Lucía, the water reached a height of two metres. The Mayor ruled out the possiblity that the stream overflowed because the bed of the stream was dirty and badly maintained, instead putting the cause down to an excessive volume of rain in a short period of time.
In Puente de Génave, one hundred homes were flooded as the Rio Guadalimar burst its banks and several roads in the area became impassable due to the build up of large ponds of water.
In Granada, the main N-333 was cut near Campotéjar and the residents of the capital were treated to a spectacular hailstorm.
