A 24 year old man died yesterday in Cádiz as a result of stab wounds, possibly self inflicted. The incident occurred during the beach barbecue celebrations which were attended by around 70,000 people.
The annual all night barbecues on La Victoria beach are part of the celebrations of the Ramón de Carranza Trophy, this year contested by Cádiz and Sevilla F.C. Attendance this year was around 70,000 people, up by 10,000 on last year. In past years, over 100,000 people have turned out for the celebrations.
At around 03:20 on Sunday morning, the Emergency Services received reports of a man losing a lot of blood as a result of stab wounds to the thorax. After being tended at the scene, the man was transferred to the Hospital Puerta del Mar but died several hours later.
Although it has yet to be confirmed, preliminary indications are that the stab wounds were self inflicted.
The celebrations were monitored by 15 Guardia Civil officers, 30 National and 75 Local Police officers and 36 members of a private security firm.
A total of 149 people were treated by medical personnel during the celebrations with 13 of the injured requiring hospital treatment. The vast majority of cases related to excessive alcohol consumption and minor cuts and abrasions.
At 06:00 on Sunday morning, when the celebrations officially ended, the cleaning services moved in to remove around 65 tons of accumulated garbage!
