Down on the Balcón de Europa today was a stand run by the Junta de Andalucía, it’s purpose being to inform people about fish. And very interesting it was too!
There was instruction on different types of fish, such as blue and white, minimum size requirements and ways of determining whether the fish you are contemplating buying is fresh! Some will know these ways, others maybe won’t.
The eye of the fish should be shiny, not dull.
The gill area should be red.
If you press the body of the fish it should spring back out .
If you blow into a fish, the (shiny) eye should also puff up. There probably aren’t too many fishmongers, however, who would welcome customers giving their fish the kiss of life.
There is, of course, a big TV campaign going on at the moment about minimum sizes for fish.
