Work on expanding the Rio Verde water treatment plant (ETAP) in the Axarquia is due to start in October.
The €29 million project will double the capacity of the water treatment plant from 2,300 litres per second to 4,600 litres per second and will ensure the supply of drinking water to some 1.6 million people.
The supply, an allocation of 250 litres per capita per day is designed to meet the future needs of the Costa del Sol, especially during the summer months when demand is high.
The plant will incorporate a number of new filtration systems.
