An estimated 7,000 people gathered yesterday for the Feria de la Aceituno (Festival of the Olive) in the town of Alozaina and the celebrations will be continuing until the early hours of tomorrow morning when a spectacular firework display will signal the end of festivities.
The cultivation of olives has provided the livelihood of many families in the area for centuries. This year, the local olive variety ‘manzanilla’ (camomile) has been awarded the prestigious ‘denominación de origen’, the first table olives in Spain to receive such a designation.
The festivities continue today with dog shows, more food and drink, music and, at midnight, a performance by the comic La Morta. The feria will end at around three o’clock in the morning with a firework display.
