Alfarnate is the only town in the Axarquia to celebrate a Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos (Festival of Moors and Christians) and yesterday was the day it happened.
Despite inclement weather sending people scurrying for shelter every so often and the odd delay, the festival was enacted in all its glory yesterday in Alfarnate.
The festival is popular but, in recent times, the majority of participants have been choosing to dress as Moors. The reasons for this ranging from it being ‘easier’ to a greater opportunity to wear varying colours. To counter this trend, the organisers offered prizes for the ;best dressed Christians.
The prize for individual winners was €50 and for groups, a ham and a bottle of whiskey. Not bad at all. I suppose next year there will be too many Christians!
