The poet José Antonio Muñoz Rojas died last night in Antequera, just short of his one hundredth birthday.
This year, in celebration of his centenary (October 9th), the Junta de Andalucía had named him author of the year along with Antonio Machado and various celebrations were planned, including an international conference starting on October 8th, the eve of his birthday.
The conference coincides with the opening of a commemorative exhibition chronicling the life of the poet.
José Antonio Muñoz Rojas belonged to the neo-renaissance group of poets and was a founder, along with José Antonio Maravall, Leopoldo Panero and José R. Santeiro, of the ‘Nueva Revista’.
Amongst his many awards were the Premio Nacional de Poesía (1998) and the Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana (2002).
