The Guardia Civil has detained a number of people involved in the smuggling of hashish into Spain from Morocco using autogyros, a sort of cross between a plane and a helicopter.
With so much scrutiny of maritime traffic off the coast of Andalucia, both in relation to drugs and illegal immigration, drugs traffickers have been trying alternative means to get their cargoes into Spain, the autogyro being one of those methods.
Small, light and able to take off and land almost anywhere, these craft were probably an obvious alternative to boats.
Six people were arrested during Operation Fawn, an investigation which started last summer after the discovery of a network bringing drugs into Málaga province for redistribution throughout Spain.
In the raid, police seized one autogyro, five luxury cars and around 130 kilos of hashish. Six people were arrested and another five have been charged in connection with the smuggling operation.
