The economic crisis, combined with fewer British and German tourists visiting the coast out of season, could mean that more hotels will close for the winter and some will actually file for bankruptcy.
The coastal region, according to the hoteliers, is becoming more seasonally affected. Normally, around 80% of hotels on the Málaga coast, of which there are 350, are permanently open all year round, but this may change this winter. It is thought that up to 35% could close during the winter months.
There are those, however, who are keen to see that the Costa del Sol does not become just a seasonal destination based on sand, sun and sea, and believe that golf, beauty, health, conferences and various other attractions are the answer.
