Junta de Andalucía and the Provincial Council could finally become involved in the completion of the Nerja History Museum, a project started by the Nerja Caves Foundation on land supplied by the Municipal Council.
At a plenary session of the Provincial Government, a socialist motion urging the Ministries of Tourism and Culture to join a tri-partite funding agreement was approved by all parties.
The museum building, funded by a €2.4 million loan secured by the Nerja Caves Foundation, is complete, it now just needs filling. The budget for content provisioning has been set at €1.8 million.
The Nerja Council has been trying to get provincial and regional support for the museum project for several months and at yesterday’s meeting, the Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, proposed an amendment specifically calling for financial assistance from the provincial authorities of €900,000. This proposal was, however, rejected.
If, and it is still an ‘if’, the provincial and regional governments do become involved in a financial way, it could mean the museum actually opening a lot earlier than currently looks to be the case.
