The parents of a ten month old girl who died at the weekend as a result of infection with the Influenza A virus and pneumonia have denounced the Hospital Materno Infantil in Granada for medical malpractice.
The baby, who suffered from West Syndrome, a sort of epilepsy, was taken to the hospital with a fever and mucal congestion where medical staff prescribed an antipyretic and a mucolytic and sent the child home, telling the parents to bring her back in twenty-four hours if her condition didn’t improve.
The parents returned to the hospital a few hours later with the child hardly able to breathe. The baby died in the ICU a short while later and tests confirmed she was suffering from Influenza A and pneumonia.
The Ministry of Health insists that the protocols used by the medical staff were correct.
