The Council has awarded the contract for the renovation of Plaza Canterero (Orange Square) and work is scheduled to begin in the middle of November.
The contract is for €230,000 and is being jointly financed by the Council and the Council of Commerce and Trade. The Councillor for Infrastructure, José Alberto Tomé, described the project as ‘ambitious’.
Under the project, part of calle San Miguel will, in effect, be incorporated into the square. The road will be separated from the square by a ‘green area’, which involves moving the hedges to form a sort of barrier.
The pergolas will be reconstructed to improve access from the surrounding streets, the seating will be renewed and new sheltered areas added and a new pathway will be constructed which will lead directly from calle San Miguel into the square.
There are no plans to do anything with the central fountain and the general idea is to try and keep the overall idiosyncrasies of the square.
The implementation time has been set at five months, but we all know what that usually means!
