A new city ordinance introduced in Granada today sees, amongst other things, the banning of prostitution in public places with fines for both the prostitutes and their clients.
The offering, solicitation, negotiation and acceptance of sexual services within 200 meters of residential areas, schools, commercial and business is considered a serious offence and carries a fine of up to €3,000. Outside this zone the offence is considered less serious and the fines are from €1 to €750.
The ordinance also covers such things as begging, air pollution, light and noise, graffiti and street artists. Pushy or aggressive begging and the use of children as ‘bait’ are prohibited and the cleaning of windscreens at traffic lights by enterprising individuals should also disappear as these people will now be fined on the grounds that they obstruct the traffic flow.
Street musicians and artists must now have a permit, although this will generally be purely a formality involving letting the authorities know where they will be performing.
Grafitti on vehicles, shelters, parks and building facades will be considered a serious offence, with fines ranging between €751 and €1,500. Parents will be liable for the scribblings of their offspring. Grafitti on monuments is considered a very serious offence and carries a fine of up to €3,000.
