José Luis Navas has the dubious honour of becoming the first socialist mayor in the Axarquia to be sentenced to jail for city planning violations.
The Criminal Court Number 7 in Málaga sentenced José Luis Navas, Mayor of Sayalonga, to one year in prison and disqualified him from public office for a further nine years.
The charges related to the construction of a property in the Pago Batahiz area of Sayalonga in 2000. The builder was also indicted on the same charges but was acquitted.
The sentence has yet to be confirmed and can still be appealed to the Provincial Court.
