Around one hundred businessmen from the Castillo Alto industrial estate marched through the streets of Nerja to protest against the decision to levy increased urbanisation fees due to the fact that some of the industries occupy larger plots of land than was at first envisaged.
The business owners are upset because when they bought their plots, some of which date back thirty years, they did so in good faith and there was apparently no mention, until recently, that any of them were exceeding their allotted volume.
Now, suddenly, they are faced with a bill of around €1 million and they are none too happy, accusing the Council of gross dereliction of duty in the handling of the situation.
The protest march, which was without incident, began on the industrial estate and ended up at the Town Hall where a letter was submitted to the Town Council. Representatives then met with the Mayor, José Alberto Armijo, and the Councillor for Urban Affairs, Inocencia Quintero, to discuss the situation.
