The Infanta Elena and Jaime de Marichalar, Duke of Lugo, have signed divorce papers, two years after officially announcing the temporary cessation of cohabitation.
The Dukes of Lugo were married on 18 March 1995 and have two children, Felipe Juan Froilan (11 years) and Victoria Federica (9 years). After the separation, Jaime de Marichalar remained in the marital home while the Infanta Elena and the two children found alternative accommodation.
The title Duke of Lugo was bestowed upon Jaime de Marichalar by the King on the day of the wedding but is a non-hereditary title and will not be able to be used after the finalisation of the divorce.
Jaime de Marichalar belongs to an aristocratic Castilian family, linked to the monarchy since ancient times. His grandfather, Luis de Marichalar y Monreal, Viscount of Eza, was minister of the Army and Navy during the reign of Alfonso XIII.
